ROTARY

ROTARY is a small abstract strategy game of local rotations, territory, and balance.

This HTML version is based on an original game for the Primo, a Hungarian home computer from the 1980s. The author of the original Primo program is currently unknown. The rules of the game were reconstructed and described by Krisztián Németh:

The game also exists as a board game and can be found on other Hungarian game-history and board-game pages, for example here:

In 2024, Zoltán Varga also created a Rotary variant for the Aircomp-16, another Hungarian home computer platform:

In ROTARY, two players try to occupy the three central target fields. On each turn, the player places a virtual spinner on a legal empty field and rotates only the six neighbouring pieces around it, counter-clockwise, by 1–5 steps of 60 degrees. A field is legal only if it is empty, has at least one neighbouring piece of the player, and has more friendly than opposing pieces around it.

I created this HTML remake as a tribute to the gaming culture of the Primo Hungarian home computer and to the small, inventive logic games of early home computing in Hungary:
