WOW77 egy apró, atmoszférikus mintázatfelismerő játék HT PTK-1072 programozható számológépre, illetve annak közeli rokonára, a Commodore PR-100-ra.

A játékot egy valódi történelmi ihletésű pillanat inspirálta. 1977 augusztusában az Ohio State University Big Ear rádióteleszkópja egy szokatlanul erős, keskenysávú rádiójelet észlelt. A jel adatsorát Jerry Ehman később átnézte, bekarikázta, és melléírta híressé vált megjegyzését: “Wow!” A jel eredete máig nem tisztázott teljes bizonyossággal.

A mi játékunk háttértörténete szerint szintén 1977-ben, egy magyar obszervatóriumban ülünk szolgálatban egy kísérleti jelanalizáló állomás mellett. A számológép kijelzőjén egymás után jelennek meg a rádiótávcső nyolcjegyű numerikus mérései. Szinte mindegyik egyszerű kozmikus zaj — de nagy ritkán feltűnhet valami különös, valami rendezett, valami, ami talán nem természetes eredetű.

A játék célja egyszerű: minden megjelenő jelről el kell döntened, hogy zaj vagy idegen jel. A kezelése minimális, a feszültsége viszont annál nagyobb: figyelned kell a számokra, felismerni a rendet a káoszban, és nem szabad hibáznod. A poént nem lövöm le: a ritka jel pontos ismertetőjegyét neked kell felfedezned játék közben.

WOW77 is a tiny, atmospheric pattern-recognition game for the HT PTK-1072 programmable calculator and its close relative, the Commodore PR-100.

The game was inspired by a real historical moment. In August 1977, the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University detected an unusually strong narrowband radio signal. When Jerry Ehman later reviewed the printout, he circled the data and wrote his famous comment: “Wow!” The true origin of the signal remains uncertain to this day.

In the fictional background story of this game, it is also 1977, and you are on duty at a Hungarian observatory, sitting beside an experimental signal-analysis station. On the calculator display, eight-digit numerical readings from a radio telescope appear one after another. Almost all of them are ordinary cosmic noise — but very rarely, something unusual may emerge: something ordered, something structured, something that may not be natural.

Your goal is simple: for each reading, decide whether it is noise or an alien signal. The controls are minimal, but the tension is real: you must watch the numbers carefully, recognize order inside apparent chaos, and avoid mistakes. I will not spoil the trick here — the exact signature of the rare signal is something the player has to discover.
